He used to look forward to going home for the holidays. Spending time at the Manor, and receiving presents. Not this year. He didn't want to go back home. But he had little choice, almost everywhere were *his* people. Even on the Hogwarts Express. So he had no choice, but to head back for home. He only met his parents back home itself, and immediately fled for the minor sanctuary of his room.

Some peace before they would ask him to do something about the prisoners, or worse, another task to do.

Comes a knocking at the door. Considering the impatience of the one doing the knocking it's deceptively gentle.

"Come out little fox; I know you're in there," says a voice Draco should by now know only too well.

Rodolphus, his uncle, is trying to get Draco's attention.

He might have orders, or he might be acting of his own accord. Often it's hard to tell which unless he starts to boast about how "the Dark Lord trusts me".

Draco briefly froze into ice at that, and then got up. He then waved the door open with his wand, but didn't make eye contact with his uncle.

"Your timing is improving," he says with an undertone of malice. "Used to take you longer to open the door for me."

In his estimation, any delay is "taking longer" to "do something".

Ask Rabastan about what Rodolphus is like when he thinks someone's dallying about.

"Bored little nephew? Can't stand the company your parents are hosting? And here I thought you enjoyed having us over. For tea. A chat.

Work for the Dark Lord."

Draco just remained silent and tense. Better not to answer, might give something away then. His grey eyes briefly flickered up to meet Rodolphus, but then he stared at the floor again.

He'll only give something away if he lets his facial expression show something he doesn't want Rodolphust to know about.

Rodolphus is no Legilimens.

"Why don't you come downstairs? We can ... chat about what we're going to do today?"

Which means, "what Rodolphus wants to do today".

His parents trained him well enough. Though he couldn't hide his fear. He hadn't for months now.

There was the briefest nods before he stepped out to follow his uncle downstairs.

Coward...

Coming downstairs he can see the others scattered about, looking thoroughly bored as they sit or pace around the room.

Wasting no time, he barks orders at all of them, telling them to do this or that, and, as they know him well, nobody sticks around long enough to make him angry for not doing as told.

The Lestranges [two of them, anyways], it seems, enjoy a certain level of seniority amongst the Death Eaters.

This seniority is why Rodolphus sits himself down at the table and orders a house-elf to bring food and drink like he owns the place and everything in it.

He was no better than the Dark Lord on attempting humiliation.

He bit his tongue, but there were hints of sharp ice in his grey eyes. This was not his home, and it would never be. Sooner see it destroyed than any of them to claim it.

Draco's look of anger only serves to amuse his uncle, who pulls out a cigarette from his shirt pocket and lights it, surveying the Malfoy family home with an assessive eye.

Like he was envisioning the kinds of changes he'd make to the Malfoy's sense of puffed-up opulence.

"I'll bet you're just dying to know what we're going to do today, you and I."

Draco would swear by Merlin's wand that would never happen. Not if he and his family could stop it, though he had no idea what they could do if anything now. His father was reduced to borrowing his wife's wand after the Dark Lord took his, and it was destroyed.

He quietly remarked, so quiet it would be hard to hear, "Not exactly."

Taking his eyes off the decor after several minutes he blew smoke in the direction of Draco.

He made no pretense now that he thought much of his nephew, the way he did in the past.

If he ran the show Draco would have been eliminated, even if the stated objective of killing Dumbledore was achieved.

No room for the weak.

"Well, since you don't seem eager to ask I'll tell you. You're coming with me to help me on a task that'll send a message to those fools at Potter Watch that defiance of our Lord means death."

The first cigarette finished he starts on another.

"They think they're safe because they don't stay in one place long. We'll change their thinking. If they somehow manage to survive."

Draco grew still at that. He overheard some things on the Wizard Wireless. Rumors that it included classmates. Blood traitors and likely mud...muggleborns, not that should matter now to him. Much as it did to others.

They were fools... and yet part of him envied them. That they could say what they wanted.

"I doubt they'll be persuaded. They don't fear him enough obviously." Still couldn't get his voice much above a whisper.

They won't be saying anything at all once they're found and eliminated with extreme prejudice.

"What's that boy? Speak up." His expression is menacing. "You'd better not be thinking of a way to get out of this, because I ain't gonna let you."

Draco was still a Malfoy, so he summoned up some of his old confidence and disdain. In a louder voice, he replied thusly:

"Of course not, Uncle. They're fools to think they could defy the Dark Lord, and not be punished." Parroting like he used to for his father.

Rodolphus' expression is still feral, indicating that he believes that Draco is anything but sincere in his words, but after a moment he relaxes.

But only a little.

"Much better. It seems you at least heard whatever Lucius might have told you in the past."

He pulls from his cigarette.

"This isn't a mission from the Dark Lord, boy, but I think he will appreciate the gesture nevertheless. And once we're done with them, Nagini will appreciate it too."

He chuckles at that.

Draco couldn't entirely hide his shudder at the idea. Nagini's other times of feasting had haunted his nightmares for months.

He also ignored the jibe, and just asked simply, "How soon do we leave?" He just hoped they wouldn't be found.

He quirks an eyebrow. "I didn't think you were that eager to go?"

Perhaps Draco really was Death Eater material?

Or was he like Rabastan, interested in going sooner in order to get the job done that much earlier?

"Well, since you're all eager to go we can either leave now or in a few hours."

Second one, definitely the second one. Maybe it will be quick, and fairly painless even. Best he can hope for now.

"Might as well be now. Better chance of surprising them."

Draco? It's Rodolphus. "Quick and painless" he doesn't do.

He claps his hands together, just happy to have an outlet for his instinct for mayhem today.

"Very good. And, before we go, I might add that there's a good chance we'll be putting your furry talent to work for us."

A grin. Normally Rodolphus would shun the idea of learning the Animagus trick [especially considering that in the bar he's just a common serving-rat], but the thought that the animal form could be used towards dark ends made him rethink it.

"You've got a nose in that shape? You might be able to sniff them out for us?"

If Rod turned into a rat, Draco as a fox might be tempted to hunt him. Or have him be a Nagini snack then.

Draco briefly looked surprised at that, and then admitted, "I guess, maybe."

Draco could only do that for as long as Asar-Suti's charms remained in effect. Once the stone is broken he will return to himself, and ready for vengeance.

"Very good. Get your coat on we'll be leaving in five minutes."

Pause.

"The one without fur?"

Draco paused at that, and went to fetch his coat. Accio the thing distractedly from his closet, and putting it on. He sighed. Very glad that Mia couldn't see what he was doing. What was being asked of him. He systematically then tried to bury his emotions as best as he could in his mind, compartmentalizing it all.

Only then did he head back to meet with his uncle again. Every inch the ice prince. For now.

"You're a minute late," he says, glowering with intensity. "I don't like it when people are late."

He already has his coat on. What he really wants is to go about in full Death Eater regalia, but that was something he could save for when he found the Potter Watch group.

He pulls out a missive from his coat pocket. In the letter it details where the Potter Watch was last confirmed to be. He nods, and tells Draco where they'll be Apparating to to begin the search.

"I hope you're able to fully Apparate because I have no time or inclination to fix any splinchings you might do." (http://do-you-fear-me.livejournal.com/1181.html)
